This project goes beyond just a simple experiment. The composition “Ambigroup” is an audible representation of a time in India when we could only view movies and television through constantly fluctuating antenna frequencies, bootleg video tapes and low quality visual feedback. In essence, my nostalgia is intertwined in the videotape culture.
This project is a visual representation of nostalgia. Of an earlier time when analog mediums and video tracking that dominated my childhood memories. I picked these old Bollywood films to provide a more exotic view of those early memories to the viewers, yet it is the most personal i can get to my memories. Displaced, and out of synch with time, the memories are distant but ever prevalent in my mind, broadcasting from light years away and now showing itself in a collaged mess on contemporary monitors. Unable to decode itself.
The technical process involved capturing old VHS videos. While capturing, I played with the clockwork of the VHS player, agitating the playback process. Causing heavy distortion of the imagery. Providing the very definition of my project.
Thank You Leaving Records and Matthewdavid for letting me use their audible composition in my visual project.
And Craig Smith and Miko Revereza for providing their information on video editing related materials.
